The IMF reports a cyber attack

WASHINGTON, (EFE).— The International Monetary Fund (IMF) revealed that on February 16 it detected a cyber attack that affected eleven email addresses of the international organization.

The incident remains under investigation but, following detecting the attack, the IMF said it took measures to secure the eleven affected addresses.

“Beyond these email accounts, at this time we have no indications that there are any others compromised,” the monetary body said in a press release yesterday.

The IMF did not reveal the names of the users of the affected accounts or their positions. Nor did he indicate in his text whether the attackers obtained confidential or reserved information.

The Washington-based financial organization explained that the institution has “a robust cybersecurity program” to respond to attacks.

The IMF has warned on numerous occasions of the dangers that cyber attacks pose to financial systems.

In 2023, it warned that, following auditing 51 countries, 56% of their central banks or monetary authorities did not have a national strategy to deal with cyber attacks on the financial system and in 64% tests to prevent them were not mandatory.
