Today, however, more and more new vehicles come with front fog lights as standard. These allow you to see better in front, while not dazzling the drivers in front because they are adjusted downwards.

Not to be confused with high beams, i.e. the large headlights which, directed upwards, offer visibility up to 100 m, but strongly dazzle other users. In case of fog, these lights tend, on the contrary, to reduce visibility even more by creating a real white curtain.

Within 100 meters

The AWSR (Walloon Road Safety Agency) reminds you of the rules concerning fog lights. “Rear fog lights must be used in fog or snowfall when visibility is less than 100 meters,” explains Belinda Demattia, spokesperson. In Belgium, it is also obligatory to use them in case of heavy rain.”

At the front, for cars equipped with them, “they can be used in heavy rain, snowfall or fog. They can replace the low beam or main beam headlights, or be switched on simultaneously with these lights.”

Be careful, as soon as conditions improve, you must turn off your fog lights because they become dazzling. This also constitutes a category 1 offense, i.e. an immediate fine of €50.
