The Intelligent Speed Limiter: How the New Car Regulations Will Impact You

According to the Vias Institute, 15% of collisions with injuries in Belgium are due to too high speed. “One in three fatal accidents is even due to excessive or inappropriate speed.”

Here’s why your next car will be restricted

Faced with this observation, the European Commission has been working, in recent years, on a project for which we still wonder, today, why the idea did not come up sooner: that of an intelligent speed limiter which would make it possible to read the limit signs and automatically lower the car’s speed. No more way to overcome the limitation “by distraction”, therefore.

The project was successful and requires, since 2022, all new models to have the device, called ISA (English acronym meaning intelligent speed adaptation). Each manufacturer who therefore wished to put a new model on the market had to integrate the device. But there was a flaw in this matter: older models were not affected. And vehicles leaving the factory after 2022 but concerning a model before 2022 could therefore drive without ISA. From July 7, this will no longer be the case: the device will now be mandatory on all new cars put into circulation in the European Union.

Here we are: a black box installed in your car to spy on the way you drive

However, the system can be deactivated each time it is started via the dashboard controls. And, for safety reasons, it will also be automatically deactivated when the driver strongly presses the accelerator pedal, similar to what is done for cruise control. This system works through geolocation data as well as recognition of traffic signs via cameras. Furthermore, it can also be used by police services to determine responsibility in a road accident, the ISA system recording all vehicle-related data (speed, braking, etc.)
