The iPad Pro could inherit this popular iPhone charging function

Installed in 2020 on the iPhone 12, MagSafe magnetic charging could finally be available on the iPad Pro. In any case, this is what a source cited by MacRumors suggests… and not just any source, since it would be close to the companies which supply Apple with magnets.

Reserved for the moment for iPhones, certain accessories (such as AirPods Pro) and the latest generations of MacBooks (in a quite different form), MagSafe magnetic charging could soon make its way to iPad Pros. In any case, this is what we learn from a source cited by the specialized media MacRumors, which suggests that Apple is in the process of extending this type of charging to its high-end tablets.

In this case, this source deserves to be taken seriously since it would have “ links with companies that manufacture magnets for Apple products “. At this stage, however, it is unknown what type of MagSafe connector would be used for the iPad Pros.

MagSafe iPhone style… or MacBook style?

As Android Authority points out, the variety of MagSafe charging available on iPhones does not work with a metal chassis similar to that currently used on iPads. If this type of “dorsal” MagSafe charging is used in the future on Apple’s premium tablets, it is therefore a safe bet that a change in design is planned, as well as a change in the materials used. for the chassis of future iPad Pros (with a switch to plastic and/or glass, in particular).

This avenue should not be dismissed out of hand since Bloomberg had reported, a few months ago, of a potential new design coming to the next generations of iPad Pro. Opting for this “back” MagSafe connector would also have the advantage of allowing the reuse, on the iPad Pro, of certain MagSafe accessories initially intended for the iPhone.

That being said, note that it is possible that Apple will instead turn to “wired” MagSafe charging, similar to that used on the latest MacBooks. We imagine that in terms of design, this would require less work than completely revising the design of the iPad Pro to install a back MagSafe connector. However, this would also be an interesting implementation, if only to free up the USB-C port during charging.
