According to a leak, the iPhone 17 could benefit from a new coating for its screen. Like that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it would not only be more resistant, but also anti-reflective.

The iPhone 16 has not yet been released and we are already hearing about its successor, the iPhone 17. On Weibo, the Chinese microblogging site, a leaker known under the pseudonym “Instant Digital » asserts have information on the coating of the next iPhones.

A new “super hard” coating

According to the informant, Apple has purchased a large quantity of screen coating equipment in Japan and has already sent it to assembly plants in China. He mentions a “super hard anti-reflective layer» which should make the iPhone 17 «much more scratch resistant than you can imagine ».

Why iPhone 17? Well the development of the iPhone 16 would already be too advanced to integrate this element into mass production. You would therefore have to wait one more year to benefit from it.

Last year, the iPhone 15 (Pro) could be considered the smartphone with the most durable screen. With its Ceramic Shield coating, it resists materials with a hardness of at least seven on the Mohs scale. All durability tests showed excellent results: the iPhone screen is very strong, so it should get even better in 2025.

An anti-reflective filter

But even more than scratch resistance, the most interesting point of this novelty lies in its anti-reflective coating, a new element that can mark a real differentiation between the ultra premium market and other smartphones. This point is also one of the arguments of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, released last January.

All Galaxy S24 Ultra tests praised the Gorilla Glass Armor coating. Samsung and Corning announce a reduction in reflections of around 75%. This point should influence not only the comfort of using the screen, but also the autonomy.

The screen of a smartphone has a big impact on its consumption, some say 30%, but this figure fluctuates depending on the phone and its components. One thing is certain: the higher the brightness, the more the screen consumes. And if the screen suffers less from reflections, its brightness can be reduced for equal reading comfort. Such an improvement therefore allows energy savings on a daily basis.

Still, this remains a rumor today and Apple does not hesitate to delay its plans when the quality does not live up to its expectations. We will therefore have to wait until September 2025 to judge.
