The Italian left presents the extremist Ilaria Salis, arrested in Hungary, as a candidate in the elections to the European Parliament.

Salis, detained in a Budapest prison, is a candidate in the elections to the European Parliament within the Italian left-wing political group “Red-Green Alliance” (RGA).

“The appointment of Ilaria Salis aims to guarantee the rights and dignity of a European citizen. Ilaria Salis, within the alliance, wants to launch a large-scale and generous fight on behalf of the European Union to defend the principles of the rule of law,” – says KZA’s statement.

Leader of the KZA and leader of the Italian left party Nicolas Fratoianni told the press that Salis would probably be presented as leader of the alliance list in the north-east constituency during the European elections in June. Certainly, to obtain a result in the European elections, the alliance must cross the four percent mark, which the red-greens did not reach during the last legislative elections in Italy.

The Red-Green Alliance was created in 2022 before the last legislative elections in Italy. The political association currently has four senators in the Upper House of the Italian Parliament, eleven deputies in the Lower House and one deputy in the European Parliament.

Prime Minister of Italy Georgia MeloniResponding to journalists present at the EU summit in Brussels, he stressed that the appointment of Ilaria Salis “does not change the attitude and work of the government on this issue.” However, she added that now “politicizing this issue would serve no purpose.” In turn, a MEP from the right-wing “League” Suzanne Ceccardi called Salis’ appointment a disgrace:

“The left is proposing to acquit a person accused of very serious crimes. Ilaria Salis must defend herself in court, not against the court.”

EADaily recalls that Salis is in pre-trial detention in Hungary for acts which led to serious consequences for the victims. Salis arrived in Budapest in the company of young people attack and brutally beat random passers-by on its streets, whom she identified as “fascists” by their appearance. In extremist terminology, Salis was a “thresher,” that is, she provoked people with her aggressive behavior, and then the thugs joined in the beating. Due to her violent character, the Italian woman was brought to the Hungarian court with chains on her hands and feet.
