Two days after the death of Carène Mazino, a 37-year-old nurse, mother of two, mortally wounded with a knife at the university hospital center (CHU) in Reims (Marne), where she worked, the emotion is coupled with questions about the causes of this tragedy, which also seriously injured a 56-year-old medical secretary. The attacker is a 59-year-old man with a serious psychiatric history.
As requested by the Reims public prosecutor’s office, the suspect, Franck F., was indicted on Wednesday evening May 24 for “murder and attempted murder”, and placed in pre-trial detention. In the middle of the day, Wednesday, the public prosecutor of Reims, Matthieu Bourrette, had given several elements of context on this tragedy. Arrested immediately after the events, Franck F. has a heavy psychiatric past. Diagnosed in 1985 as suffering from schizophrenia, he made many stays in psychiatric hospitals, and lived under guardianship, with the status of disabled adult.
Very agitated during his police custody, the fifties admitted a premeditated attack. The man had also been placed under curatorship since March 2019; a measure entrusted to a guardianship manager from Châlons-en-Champagne where he was followed in psychiatry. When he was not hospitalized under duress, Franck F. was closely monitored medically. However, acknowledged Mr. Bourrette, opinions differed on his case between the psychiatrist in charge of his follow-up and the legal representative.
