The Kansas City Chiefs entered the Super Bowl three times between 2020 and 2023, winning twice – also thanks to superstar Patrick Mahomes. Before that, the franchise in the NFL had to overcome a 50-year dry spell.

NFL Team Briefs: The Kansas City Chiefs Facts

  • Year of foundation: 1960
  • Division: AFC West
  • Super Bowl wins: three (1970, 2020, 2023)
  • Stadion: Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri

The Chiefs were formed in the American Football League (AFL) in 1960 as the “Dallas Texans”. With the Dallas Cowboys entering the National Football League (NFL) that same year, officials were looking for a new location for their team.

In 1962, the organization finally moved to Kansas City and appeared under its current name from 1963. The franchise won the AFL three times in total and even made it to the Super Bowl in 1970. In the final, the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. It would be half a century before the team won another title.

After winning Super Bowl IV, the Chiefs joined the restructured NFL in 1970. There, the team regularly showed good performances in the regular season, but mostly dropped out of the playoffs early. By the 2010s, Kansas City was sinking into league mediocrity.

Patrick Mahomes enchants the NFL

In January 2013, Andy Reid takes over the helm in Missouri. The new head coach turned the Chiefs into a top team that made it into the postseason three times between 2016 and 2018, only to bow out after the first game each time.

Eventually, Reid installed Patrick Mahomes as the starting quarterback. The playmaker led his team to the 2019 AFC Championship Game, where they suffered a narrow 31-37 loss to eventual Super Bowl winners, the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs had tasted blood from then on and advanced to the NFL finals in 2020, only to be crowned Super Bowl champions again after almost exactly 50 years with a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

In February 2021, the team failed in Super Bowl LV at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers around superstar Tom Brady, before two years later the third title in franchise history could be won.
