The Kashmir Files | Singapore bans ‘The Kashmir Files’

The Kashmir Files, a film about the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley, has been banned in Singapore. According to reports, the film is being rated for film certification guidelines in the country. Singapore is a multi-ethnic country.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement that the authorities had assessed that ‘The Kashmir Files’ did not comply with Singapore’s film classification guidelines.

Officials told Channel News Asia that the film would be rejected for portraying Muslims in a provocative and biased manner and for portraying Hindus as being persecuted during the ongoing conflict in Kashmir. The authorities added that this could lead to animosity between different communities and disrupt social cohesion and religious harmony.

Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, the director behind the success of ‘The Kashmir Files’, has accused a section of the foreign media of trying to launch an ‘international political campaign’ against his film.

Vivek had spoken about this at a press conference in Delhi last week. He said that with the film’s historic success, foreign media outlets realized that they were undermining their narrative.

Vivek also reacted to the allegations leveled against his film. The film, which was a huge success at the box office, is still in theaters. Speaking about a group of people who described the film as ‘problematic’, Vivek alleged that the trend was spreading ‘anti-Muslim sentiment’.

“Most of our crew were Muslims. 100% of the people in Kashmir were Muslims. The shooting of the hero and a boy is one of the important scenes in the film. I asked an activist from the Kashmir Valley to write that scene. I said, ‘You want to be represented in the film. “It is a shame that I have to come and say all these things myself, but I have to expose those who use Islamophobia as a political weapon against us,” he said.

The film stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead roles.
