Buoyed by rising demand for artificial intelligence, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s largest chipmaker, plans to invest nearly NT$90 billion ($2.87 billion) in a packaging facility in northern Taiwan, the company said Tuesday.

“To meet the needs of the market, TSMC plans to set up an advanced packaging plant in Tongluo Science Park,” the company said in a statement.

TSMC CEO C.C.Y. said last week that the company is unable to meet customer demand driven by the AI boom and plans to nearly double its packaging capacity, which involves putting multiple chips into a single device, reducing the added cost of more powerful computing.

“We’re increasing our capacity as quickly as possible. We expect that to happen next year, probably towards the end of next year,” Wai previously said, after the company reported a 23% drop in second-quarter profit.

The world’s largest chipmaker said TSMC’s position as a leading manufacturer of artificial intelligence chips, including to chip designers Nvidia and AMD, did not offset broader end-market weakness as the global economy recovers slower than expected.

The company added that the management of Tongluo Science Park has officially approved TSMC’s request to lease land, adding that the new plant in northern Miaoli County will create about 1,500 jobs.

Even as TSMC, Apple’s supplier, ramps up its overseas expansion, it plans to keep its most advanced chip technologies in Taiwan, a global semiconductor powerhouse that powers everything from smartphones to electric cars.
