The Last Big Earthquake on Belgian Soil: Impact and Evolution

2023-11-08 06:49:48

This is the last big earthquake on Belgian soil. 40 years ago, on the night of November 7 to 8, 1983, Liège was awakened by tremors.

The human toll remains light, 2 dead and dozens injured. On the other hand, material damage was significant, mainly in the Liège districts of Montegnée, Saint-Nicolas and Flémalle. Collapsed chimneys, destroyed cars, damaged roofs, cracked walls… Nearly 16,000 houses were affected. 200 are even considered uninhabitable.

The earthquake is powerful. With a magnitude of 4.9, it is felt in Belgium as far as De Panne, but also in Germany in Frankfurt or Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Following this earthquake, the Belgian seismic study evolved significantly. The surveillance network has grown. And the analysis that followed transformed the way homes were built.
