The Ottawa Senators will not have been convinced by Josh Bailey.

Ottawa announced that it had released the 34-year-old forward on Sunday morning, the day after his last preparatory match. Bailey had joined the team’s camp with a professional tryout.

Bailey played in six of the Senators’ eight preseason games and did well with a goal and five assists for a total of six points.

Last season with the Islanders, he had eight goals and 17 assists in 64 games. A first-round pick of the Islanders in 2008, Bailey played his entire career with New York.

In 1057 games in the Bettman circuit, Bailey has a record of 184 goals and 396 assists for a total of 580 points.

Bailey is thus an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with the team of his choice.

Maple Leafs choose Joseph Woll

Veteran goaltender Martin Jones is part of a long list of players to be placed on waivers Sunday afternoon. This therefore means that the Leafs have decided to retain the services of young Joseph Woll to support Ilya Samsonov.

Jones signed a one-year, $875,000 contract with Toronto.

Recently claimed on waivers by their respective teams, Lassi Thomson of the Anaheim Ducks and Grigori Denisenko of the Vegas Golden Knights were also placed on waivers.

Quebecer Raphaël Lavoie was made available to NHL teams by the Edmonton Oilers, while veteran Zach Bogosian was placed on waivers by the Lightning.

For their part, the Ottawa Senators placed Boko Imama’s name on waivers.

Aston-Reese agrees with Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings have signed center Zach Aston-Reese to a one-year, two-way contract. We still don’t know the financial details.

Aged 29, Aston-Reese had 10 goals and four assists in 77 games last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Never drafted into the NHL, Aston-Reese played 307 NHL games during his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks and Maple Leafs. He has 42 goals and 38 assists.

Aston-Reese signed a professional tryout with the Carolina Hurricanes in September, but was then released a few days ago.
