On Sunday, the Latvian Hockey Federation urged fans not to go to the airport, because this year the team’s meeting will be organized in a special place – at the Freedom Monument.
Media representatives will have the opportunity to meet the players and coaches of the national team at the airport at 12:15, having previously submitted an application for participation.
On Sunday, the Latvian team finished the championship in third place, beating the Americans 4:3 in the bronze medal game.
For Latvia, this is the most successful World Cup of all time. Previously, the best result was seventh place, won three times.
The Latvian national team started the championship with two defeats, losing to Canada with a score of 0:6 and Slovakia – 1:2. After that, for the first time in the history of the championship, they managed to defeat the Czechs (4:3 in extra time), and also beat Norway – 2:1, Slovenia – 3:2, Kazakhstan – 7:0 and Switzerland – 4:3 in extra time. The points obtained in the last match allowed us not only to reach the quarterfinals, but also to take third place in Group B.
In the quarterfinals, Latvian hockey players beat Sweden – 3:1, and in the semifinals they lost to Canada with a score of 2:4.
The Canadians became the winners of this World Cup, beating Germany in the decisive match with a score of 5:2.
