The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, indicated during the movement’s special meeting entitled “From Generation to Generation” that “former President Michel Aoun, during his tenure as a military government, took over a country whose institutions were disintegrated, and there was aggression from foreign armies and militias that deceived the people and was forced to defend… Himself”.

He pointed out, “We struggled for 15 years and we knew how expensive the price of independence was, and the international issue began to slide, and General Aoun was the symbol of the movement in the diaspora. Then, the Lebanese scene took place on March 14, 2005, but it was not completed, and we were the ones who completed it,” explaining that at that stage, “we were young and dreaming.” And when there was no light of hope, we maintained our hopes and they used to say, “You want to stop attacking Syria and America,” but we had faith and conviction in preserving the country and our value. We maintained the flame and remained independent and did not wait for the circumstances to demand our rights, and this is what we do,” adding, “It was We have the audacity to do many things, and we hope at a time when everyone considered us dreaming of the Syrians’ departure. This is our country and we will defend it and this is our land, no one will take it from us.” He continued, “Then the rest of the forces inside the country came wanting to move after they saw the outside countries moving at a time when we remained hopeful, and we learned from that period that anything that concerns our future and our freedom is to be free to do what we want.” “We do.”

Basil believed that it is “a stage of which we are proud, and we are still struggling with the same ideas. This stage must be passed on to our youth, and the bullying that you were subjected to on October 17 represents a stage of which you are proud.”

Regarding the understanding with Hezbollah, Bassil stressed that “no one should think that we regret the alliance with Hezbollah,” stressing that “the understanding gave us 15 years of stability in the country, and at a time when there was an intention to isolate the party, the understanding came and we forged a partnership and led to the establishment of Stability.” On the other hand, Bassil saw that “we lost popularity as a result of the understanding because marketing Hezbollah in the Lebanese street is difficult, especially among the youth, and despite that, we sacrificed our popularity in exchange for stability, but when we reached a place where the party no longer walked with us in partnership, we moved away,” and he said: “The You are back, we are back,” that is, if Hezbollah returns to the partnership.

Bassil spoke about the arrest phase, stressing, “We did not feel afraid. On the contrary, we were bragging to each other how strong we were. And I say that the prosecution and the ministry are more tormenting than imprisonment because they imprison you for many things,” and he said: “The best thing that happened in my national life is that I I was imprisoned on August 7 and to this day we are still living in struggle.”

He added, “In the days of tutelage, at a time when the Lebanese were the foreigner and the stranger, and the army was as if it was broken by its dignity, Michel Aoun came and restored the army’s dignity.” Basil pointed out, “We used to feel our dignity when we went to Baabda, and it was engraved in my mind that Michel Aoun is dignity. Michel Aoun taught me dignity.” Patriotism, living freely, and not accepting humiliation, this is what distinguishes the movement, and I say it frankly, how much I have seen a “lack of dignity” among many politicians.”
