The Link Between Processed Foods and Depression: A Comprehensive Study

The dietary choices you make not only affect your physical health, but they may also affect your mental health. A new study finds that processed foods, especially those containing artificial sweeteners, may increase the risk of depression.

Ultra-processed foods are highly processed foods that contain sugar, salt, fat, and additives such as artificial colors or preservatives. While research has shown a link between the use of ultra-processed foods and physical health problems such as heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure, this latest study is the first comprehensive study to assess the impact of processed foods on depression.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School evaluated the eating habits of 30,000 women between 2003 and 2017, none of whom had been diagnosed with depression. The study assessed participants’ eating habits and identified a variety of ultra-processed foods they consumed, including cereals, desserts, fats and flavorings, dairy products, salty snacks, processed meats, beverages and artificial sweeteners. wait. Over the course of the study, 4,840 participants developed depression.

After adjusting for socioeconomic status, lifestyle and other health-related factors, researchers found that people who consumed nine or more servings of ultra-processed foods per day had an increased risk of depression compared with those who consumed fewer than four servings per day. 49%. Participants who were able to reduce their intake of ultra-processed foods by at least three servings per day had a lower risk of depression than those who did not change their intake. And when specific types of ultra-processed foods were analyzed, artificially sweetened beverages were found to be the riskiest category.

“These findings suggest that greater intake of ultra-processed foods, particularly artificial sweeteners and artificially sweetened beverages, is associated with an increased risk of depression,” the researchers wrote in a paper published in the Jama Network.
