In their study, the group analyzed data from the Maastricht Study on sleep duration.

The Maastricht Study was conducted to learn more about cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions. In the study, which ran from 2010 to 2018, 10,000 volunteers underwent medical exams and other tests to find out why some people get sick and others don’t. As part of the new work, the research team used this data to look for links between sleep patterns and type 2 diabetes.

The team studied data on 5,561 volunteers aged 40 to 75. The researchers analyzed sleep habits using questionnaires and accelerometers attached to the hip. Each of the volunteers also had regular glucose tolerance tests to determine if they had prediabetes or type 2 diabetes (patients with type 1 diabetes were excluded).

Through a regression analysis of the data, the scientists found what they describe as a U-shaped relationship. Those people who regularly slept more (12 hours) than was considered normal, or those who slept less (five hours), were found to have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of any other lifestyle risk factors.
