The LRT council will again try to elect a general director

During the last two contests, LRT manager Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, who is seeking re-election, and communication specialist Aistis Zabarauskas each received the same number of votes, so the director was not elected.

After A. Zabarauskas decided not to participate in the latest selection, M. Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, Vilnius University Associate Professor Mantas Martišius and analyst Aldaras Stonys, who worked for the national broadcaster more than eight years ago, are competing for the position.

On the eve of the competition, the candidates participated in a meeting with LRT employees and answered their questions.

The head of the LRT will be elected if at least seven of the 12 council members support his candidacy in a secret ballot.

If none of the candidates receives enough votes during the first voting, a second voting will be held on the same day, where the two candidates who received the most support from the council members will compete.

Culture Minister Simonas Kairys has mentioned that if the council fails to appoint the general director of LRT for the third time, it should take responsibility and resign.

The LRT council is made up of 12 persons, well-known figures of society, science and culture.

Four members of the Council are appointed by the President and the Seimas at different times, one member is delegated by the Lithuanian Science Council, the Lithuanian Education Council, the Association of Lithuanian Artists and the Lithuanian Bishops’ Conference.
