They jump, do gymnastics and even fly through the air: If you enter the gymnasium of a school in Berlin-Marzahn, you will see discipline, perseverance and real competitive sport. Because that’s where the Giants cheerleaders train.

The German Cheerleading and Cheer Performance Association (CCVD) recorded a 16 percent increase in membership last year. According to a spokeswoman, a total of around 25,000 athletes are active in 350 clubs. In the motherland of cheerleading, the USA, the phenomenon has existed for more than 100 years. While cheerleaders used to mostly have the task of hyping up the crowd before sporting events, cheerleading is now proving to be an independent sport with a demanding mix of acrobatics and floor exercises. Around 200 cheerleaders train in eight teams at the Giants in Marzahn. They also confirm that the sport is becoming more and more popular: more than 50 interested people are currently on the club’s waiting list.

“Surprisingly” and “unexpectedly” the Fabulous Giants qualified for the World Team Championships in Orlando at a competition in Sweden in December. At the beginning of May, the 26 athletes will be able to compete once morest top clubs from all over the world at the “Summit 2024 Championship2. For the Fabulous Giants, who train for the competition up to four times a week, the Summit Championship is a dream come true.
