The Medicines Agency warns pharmacists against counterfeit Ozempic

After the European and French drug authorities, the Belgian Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) also issued a warning to pharmacies on Tuesday concerning counterfeit Ozempic, a diabetes medication. These counterfeits have already surfaced in Germany and the United Kingdom. Although there is no problem yet in Belgium, the AFPMS calls for vigilance.

“Thanks to our Belgian system, the barcodes of medicines are scanned at wholesalers and no falsification has yet been observed,” specifies the FAMHP. This is therefore not an official warning. But pharmacists have every interest in remaining vigilant.

Although Ozempic was developed specifically to combat diabetes, it is also used for weight loss. In fact, it contains a substance, semaglutide, which reduces appetite in addition to blood sugar. A spike in demand threatens to cause a shortage of the drug. In the European market, this opens the door to scammers.
