“The Messi Fiasco: PSG’s Weaknesses Exposed and the Cost of Stratospheric Salaries in High-Level Sports”

This marriage, which was to seal the union of a club in search of legitimacy on the European scene and one of the greatest athletes of all time, turned into a resounding fiasco that will be remembered for a long time.

Recall that PSG has decided to suspend the Argentine striker for two weeks, after the latter decided to go to Saudi Arabia for a commercial operation without the agreement of the club.

Even if this sanction seemed to me justified at first glance, it resonates above all, in my opinion, as the great admission of weakness of an institution completely disconnected from the realities of the world of high-level sport.

Lionel Messi and PSG were in negotiations for a contract extension. No deal had yet been agreed, although the club were keen to extend it.

This punishment therefore sounds like an ego decision of the Qatari leaders, who hoped, I believe, to keep the Argentine genius within it.

Except that this kind of decision is totally counterproductive.

First, it considerably weakens the authority and legitimacy of the coach, Christophe Galtier. In my opinion, it was up to him to decide. This would have restored his authority in a group of players who seem totally lost, both on and off the pitch.

Since his arrival at the start of the season, the French coach seems unable to make strong choices, and he suffers, in my eyes, the luxury of having players like Messi, Neymar or Mbappé in his workforce.

None of these three players was replaced during the match, as if their status as international stars prevented the coach from maneuvering on the sporting level.

In addition, the PSG brand will inevitably come out damaged from this misadventure.

The Spanish and Argentinian media castigate the decision of the Parisian club and believe that it does not have the necessary stature to welcome a legend like Messi. They have the impression of seeing their idol undergo the many bad decisions of the team accumulated over the years.

A feeling of waste, therefore, which shows that money is not everything in high-level sport.

Attracting players with stratospheric salaries does not in any way guarantee the success of a sports team.

On the contrary, it creates enormous frustration with the supporters, who have the impression of seeing their team serve as a commercial ground for players solely motivated by the financial interest offered by the Parisian club.

Enough to give a smile to other supporters, like those of Inter Miami, who hope to see the Argentinian wear their color next season.
