The Metropolitan Museum of Art has pivoted to “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” a new exhibit celebrating the transformation of everyday garments and materials, after scrapping a contentious retrospective for John Galliano. The shift, announced Thursday, comes after the original show was canceled amid an outcry over Galliano’s past antisemitic statements, HuffPost reported.

The museum had no Plan B. Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Costume Institute, admitted in an interview that the new idea occurred to him while working on last year’s “Costume Art” show but remained “merely a twinkle in my eye.” The cancellation of the Galliano retrospective, which had been announced with fanfare in late July, forced the museum and Galliano himself to scrap the project under pressure from donors, city officials, and the Jewish community.

The Bottom Line

  • The Met Gala 2027 will launch “extraORDINARY,” a show on fashion’s relationship with everyday items like jeans and puffer jackets.
  • The original John Galliano retrospective was canceled in August after facing backlash; the 2027 gala would have fallen on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
  • The new exhibit was conceived from scratch with no prior research, a significant logistical challenge for the museum.

A Scuttled Show and a Race Against Time

The Galliano exhibit was set to confront the designer’s “derogatory conduct that fundamentally altered his career and public reception,” a direct reference to the racist and antisemitic comments from 2010 and 2011 that led to his firing from Christian Dior and a criminal conviction in France. The timing was particularly explosive, as the 2027 gala would have fallen on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“The harm and pain this was causing was simply unacceptable,” New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, said in August after meeting multiple times with museum leaders. Galliano himself issued a statement, saying, “I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it.”

After much controversy there’s a new Met Gala theme – will we see Juicy Couture on the Met steps?

From Galliano to the Garment in Your Closet

The new exhibit, “extraORDINARY,” will explore “how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects, and commonplace materials through craft, construction, material experimentation, and conceptual wit.”

Bolton’s inspiration came from a simple observation: “Everyday clothes carry extraordinary amounts of meaning. We have a favorite T-shirt, we have a favorite pair of jeans, and we wear them until they literally fall apart.” The show will use items from the Met’s collection, along with new loans and acquisitions, to examine how designers transform the mundane into the magnificent.

The Industry Ripple Effect of a Cultural Pivot

The Met Gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, and its guests are drawn from "luminaries from the worlds of entertainment, business, sports and politics." Maintaining the event's prestige while dealing with such sensitive cultural issues is a high-wire act.

Who Will Walk the Red Carpet in 2027?

One question remains unanswered: How will this new, populist theme influence the evening’s famously extravagant dress code? Will we see stars interpreting “the everyday” on the red carpet, or will the spectacle remain gloriously removed from the show’s more democratic subject matter?

The slate of celebrity hosts for the May 3, 2027, gala has also not yet been announced. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director and a longtime supporter of Galliano, oversees the event. “John’s decision that the exhibition devoted to his work should not take place at this time is very courageous and a measure of the man he is,” Wintour said in an August statement.

“I had no Plan B, to be honest,” Bolton said. “There wasn’t another exhibition already researched and ready to go.”

The real question for the fashion world is whether this focus on the everyday can produce an extraordinary night.
