The Mexican government deported 126 Venezuelans without papers who were being held in an immigration station in the south of the country, federal authorities reported this Saturday.

“These are 117 men and nine women who could not prove their regular entry into the country,” detailed a statement from the National Migration Institute (INM).

Faced with the growing arrival of Venezuelans, who are leaving their country due to the deep political and economic crisis that is hitting it, Mexico began to require a visa from them at the end of January.

So far in 2022, 343 Venezuelans have been deported, according to the INM.

This group was held at the Siglo XXI Immigration Station, located in Tapachula, Chiapas (south), bordering Guatemala and the main point of entry for undocumented migrants.

The Venezuelans were taken this Saturday morning to the Tapachula airport to board a plane that will return them to their country.

Thousands of Venezuelans, many traveling with their families or in large groups, have led massive caravans from Chiapas.

They have also staged sit-ins in front of immigration offices and highways to demand safe-conducts from the authorities that allow them to travel Mexico.

The vast majority of these migrants from Venezuela seek to reach the United States.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than six million Venezuelans have left their country, mired in a deep economic and political crisis..
