The Micro Plastic Menace: Why Cleaning Up Beaches Is Not Enough

2023-06-02 02:35:50

Plastic is everywhere and environmental organizations are scrambling for funds to be able to clean up a stretch of beach, or a roadside. It is an effort that is commendable, but according to several scientists, it is useless.

At QUB radio, host Philippe-Vincent Foisy spoke with Pascale Fabre. She is a researcher at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France and director of the Polymers and Ocean laboratory. According to her, picking up litter is important, but unfortunately the real problem is the micro plastic… and there is nothing to do.

“We breathe it, there are some in the soil, lamented the scientist. Everything that is already there, we will keep for thousands of years.

  • Scientist Pascale Fabre explains this important issue on Philippe-Vincent Foisy’s program via QUB radio :

Faced with such a serious finding, one wonders what can be done to limit the damage. According to Ms. Fabre, it is the plastic producers who have part of the solution in their hands.

You should know that there are more than 4000 plastic compositions in the world. Not all are recyclable. For some, their chemical formula is only known to the manufacturers, so they are even more difficult to retrieve. Ditto for those that contain significant coloring. An eye-opening interview on a problem that affects all of humanity.
