The Moroccan Federation of Sports Professionals (FMPS) organized a press conference this Tuesday in Casablanca to present the results of the first study on the sports industry.
For the purposes of the study, 321 private players in sport were interviewed (individual entrepreneurs, micro-enterprises, companies, subsidiaries of international groups, etc.). Retail and sports halls are the two segments with the most companies in the sector, it is reported.
The cumulative turnover of the sample studied amounts to 19.04 billion DH in 2022, it is indicated.
In detail, the sporting goods trade (in stores or online) represents 3.77 billion DH. With more than 604 million DH, the segment of clubs and sports halls is booming (+25% compared to 2021), notes the study. “Equipment/Infrastructure” is the 4th segment of the private sports sector in Morocco with 347.7 million DH. For its part, the sum of the budgets of the 16 Botola 1 clubs is estimated at 879 million DH.
The share of exports from the sports industry does not exceed 2% of Morocco’s annual exports, the study indicates.
Furthermore, the three main sources of employment are commerce, fitness and the professionalization of clubs. Points of sale for sports materials and equipment represented 31% of jobs in 2022, compared to 25% for clubs and sports halls and 12% for Botola clubs.
In another register, we learn of the existence in Morocco of at least 350,000 licensees distributed within 5000 sports associations. A “very low” figure (less than 1% of the Moroccan population) in comparison with other countries such as Turkey with its 3.2 million graduates (i.e. 4.1% of the Turkish population), or even the France which recorded nearly 16 million licensees in 2020 (i.e. approximately 23.5% of the French population).
However, whatever the actual number of licensees in Morocco, it will remain much lower than that of “free” practice, according to the study, which estimates the number of sports practitioners in the country at 10 million. For comparison, 70% of the French population is involved in a sporting activity.
Furthermore, the practice of sport generates jobs, notes the study. Thus, the number of jobs linked to sports practice in Morocco is estimated at 50,000 in the associative sector, with a potential of 115,000 people.
The private sports sector alone in Morocco represents at least 1.56% of GDP and employs more than 11,500 people, the study notes. “If we add the 25,000 jobs in the public sector and the 50,000 in the associative world, the sports industry exceeds the mark of 85,000 to 110,000 jobs taking into account the share of the informal sector,” we indicate.
The potential of Moroccan sport is estimated at 240,000 jobs, the study suggests.
The president of the FMPS, Mehdi Sekkouri, also announced that the Federation will soon release the first guide for sports professionals.
