The Moroccan National Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology is born

The Moroccan National Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SNMGG) was created recently in Rabat, with a view to ensuring fair medicine for the different social categories and responding to the major challenges of the new development model. The SNMGG indicates, in a press release, that its main objectives will be to standardize the processes of medical care of the elderly in Morocco, to promote the continuing medical training of all health actors and to work in concert with the different institutions for the promotion of aging well in the different fields of gerontology. The presidency of this major institution in the care and monitoring system for this segment of the population with specific needs has been entrusted to Professor Mouna Maamar, Head of the Geriatrics Unit at the CHU Ibn Sina in Rabat, Director of the Diploma university professor of geriatrics gerontology and director of the Geriatrics specialty at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat It should be noted that people over the age of 60 represent nearly 12% of the Moroccan population and life expectancy, more currently 75 years old, continues to increase. These people generally suffer from various chronic pathologies, in particular cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes, neurological diseases, rheumatism, Alzheimer’s… Thanks to geriatrics, and its multidisciplinary nature, this population can benefit of adequate care and thus improve their well-being. Unfortunately, Morocco has very few geriatricians to provide specialized consultations in all regions.
