What were the most consulted information and themes in 2023 by RTS.ch readers? What are the subjects that brought them together? In order to better understand what fueled their daily lives last year, we dissected, day after day, the audiences and content of the 3,650 most read articles of the year.

We now know him a little better, this mysterious Internet user who came to our pages. We know that he is particularly fond of sports news, with a preference for football and skiing, that he regularly inquires about the vagaries of the weather, carefully follows the conflicts which are igniting the planet, and is concerned of his finances as well as the contents of his plate. This is essentially what emerges from the analysis of the 3,650 most viewed articles by readers of the rts.ch site in 2023.

For each day of the year, we selected the 10 most read articles, then we classified each of them into one of 12 main categories (Sport; Wars and conflicts; International news; Economy and society; News Swiss and regional; Climate, nature and environment; Transport and energy; Politics in Switzerland; Celebrities, culture and entertainment; Health; Sciences, high-tech and networks; Scandals and big affairs), then in 260 subcategories.

The best annual audiences give a more general idea of ​​what marked the year. At the top of the list are the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The coverage of Yevgeni Prigozhin’s mutiny at the end of June as well as the follow-up to the Hamas offensive on October 7 are among the most read publications of the year.

The economy and the wallet also hold a prime place in the concerns of French-speaking people: the Credit Suisse affair, just like the premium comparator or even our map of electricity costs by municipality have panicked the meters.

The audiences show that Internet users have their eyes on what is happening in Switzerland. Rich political news, first of all, in this federal year, but also regional news. Readers followed with increased attention the consequences of this summer’s bad weather in La Chaux-de-Fonds or, more recently, the minute by minute of the shooting in Sion. On the sporting side, it was the accidental death of cyclist Gino Mäder in the middle of the Tour de Suisse that left its mark. The other favorite sporting activity of rts.ch readers remains skiing, with a score of 199 articles in the 10 best daily newspapers. Better: three of the five best sports audiences of the year refer to the untouchable Marco Odermatt.

Second extremely consulted category: monitoring the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, which account for 479 of the 3,650 most read articles of 2023. Only 52 days have passed without one of these two themes entering the 10 Most read articles.

News from the rest of the world occupied the best daily audiences on 441 occasions, with a particularly strong focus on France and the United States. Of the 89 most read articles concerning the United States, 35 focused exclusively on former President Donald Trump, compared to 18 on Joe Biden. Emmanuel Macron, for his part, concentrated 20 of the 97 articles linked to France around his name alone.

On the Swiss side, in addition to following the shooting in Sion, the violence in Lausanne which echoed the riots in France this summer worried nearly 80,000 readers. A little earlier, in March, it was the dramatic fire of a villa in Yverdon-les-Bains which kept nearly 100,000 people on our site in suspense.

In the “Economy and society” category, themes concerning banks and capital management come first, with 39 occurrences. The most read topics mainly revolve around payment methods (4 topics among the 10 most read), like this article on card payment which holds the record for views in the “Banks and money” subcategory. with 45,261 visits to our platforms.
