The most prestigious “Chinese” in the Russian Federation: impressions and video review of BYD Yangwang U8

2024-01-17 23:01:43

Chinese Cars has already reported the appearance of the first BYD Yangwang U8 SUVs in Russia. They talked about the technical characteristics, what this car can do and how much money they plan to sell the cars for. And now we want to share our first impressions of the new product. For example, while getting acquainted with the car, we noticed that on fast charging the iPhone did not charge quickly, and the driver’s seat made a very strange sound when moving up.

What else is memorable about the hybrid from BYD – in our material and video.

Screen by screen

BYD Yangwang U8 feels very big indeed. It is well assembled, at least a visual inspection did not give any negative impressions. The car is tall, the standard ground clearance is almost 30 cm. Therefore, the threshold that comes out when the door is opened is very useful: without it, getting in and out causes some difficulties.

In the cabin there is coziness and comfort in the “Lukhari” style. Everything is in brownish-red tones, the materials are mostly soft and tactilely pleasant, with the exception of plastic in some places that are not the most easily accessible. The leather on the chairs is soft in the center and harder at the edges. It feels like everything is done at the level of world premium brands. Even the gear selector has been moved to the steering column lever on the right side. But there is room for two wireless chargers. Tested: iPhone 13 Pro Max charges slowly from them. During the same time, the device will receive more energy through the cord. But the fact that this is a car from China is indicated by the hieroglyphs characteristic of this country.

Wireless charging didn’t seem to be the fastest

The car has three screens at the front: the instrument panel, the central multimedia screen and the display opposite the front passenger. As for the rear passengers, they also have a pair of monitors, each with its own movie or music. The passenger display has a 500 GB hard drive for storing data such as photos, movies, music, etc. There are also settings for the seat, massage, climate system and other available parameters for both front and rear passengers.

Third screen that the passenger can use

The dashboard shows not only the traffic around the car, but also the people. And even on bicycles. I don’t know where the data comes from, but standing indoors, at the central entrance to the Moscow-Tyanya automobile complex, the car showed both cyclists and a large number of passers-by, although at that time there were literally a couple of people walking around it.

Suitable for two meters

As for ease of fit, adjustments and everything related to comfort, there is plenty of this. BYD Yangwang U8 is not at all similar to those Chinese counterparts that are officially sold in Russia. Here, despite the presence of a panoramic roof, even a two-meter driver will have enough headroom. And the steering wheel is adjustable for tilt and reach, and the range is large, and everything is done by an electric motor.

There is also a lot of space for passengers in the back, as well as adjustments. The structure of the sofa implies the possibility of seating three people, but, apparently, it is designed for two. The cushion and backrest adjustments are the same as in the front seats. And the central part can be folded forward, which ultimately provides an armrest with a display, wireless charging and a couple more ports. This is a plus to what is in front of the passengers below: a climate control unit and two ports for charging gadgets. But, as in any SUV, the backs of the seats can be folded into a flat floor and, for example, a sleeping place can be organized for at least two.

In the interior of the SUV you can arrange a full double bed

The maneuver is accessible directly from the trunk; you just need to press the appropriate keys. In automatic mode, the rear row cushion begins to recline forward, right and left separately from each other. Then comes the backrest, with the headrest folded in advance. All this takes time, maybe a minute at most, and the resulting space will allow you not only to spend the night, but also to transport something bulky. The main thing is not to damage the casing, because the car is expensive, and it’s not a fact that the damage will be repaired right away.

Tango on Ice

As for movement, we were able to test the SUV only in a small area in the parking lot, and on summer tires. But of all the impressions received, the most vivid are about the active lateral support on the seats during even small maneuvers. It exactly repeats a similar option on Mercedes cars.

The “tank turn”, which is one of the “aces in the hole” of U8, could not be tested. Summer tires harden and slip in cold weather, so the car started to perform the maneuver, but at the same time it rolled forward. I’m sure this BYD could take gold for ice tango. In general, the car is ready for off-road testing from the factory: the fordability without special equipment is 1 meter, with a snorkel – 1.4 m.

Price and competitors

So far, only two cars have been brought to Russia. The SUV is mainly compared with the Gelik, apparently this is how its cost is partially justified. Li L9 is not suitable as a competitor, although, in my personal opinion, why not. M-Hero is also an option, but they said that this comrade is from a different opera.

The estimated price of 25,000,000 ₽ is high, in my opinion, but the final word belongs to the Bank of Russia ticket holders.
