Just 33 days remain until the start of the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroitand several teams still hold out hope of executing ambitious moves up the board to select their favorite prospects in the first round on April 25. One team in particular, hoping to return to contention in the NFC Northcould shake up the draft order significantly and produce a domino effect that could change the NFL‘s future.
The Minnesota Vikings need a quarterback after allowing Kirk Cousins to head to the Atlanta Falcons in free agency, and it stands to reason that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah – The Best Of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will attempt to acquire one in the first round of this year’s draft. Adofo-Mensah has already acquired the 23rd overall pick from the Houston Texans and could package it with the 11th overall pick in a bid to move into the top five — where he will be able to deliver head coach Kevin O’Connell a prized rookie quarterback.

McCarthy to Minnesota?
Rumors are swirling that the Vikingsunlikely to engineer a trade into the top three, are eyeing Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota reportedly believes that McCarthy — who led the Wolverines to a national championship in January — will not be available if they stay at #11, and at least one general manager corroborated that, saying McCarthy’s stock has skyrocketed in recent weeks.
The Vikings remain locked in negotiations with star receiver Justin Jefferson about a contract extension, and Jefferson‘s next deal will cost Minnesota a lot of money, reducing their available salary cap space. That is one of the many reasons why a first-year quarterback appeals to Adofo-Mensah, but McCarthy has been garnering rave reviews for his arm strength and his leadership skills following the CFP National Championship win over Washington.
Will Cards or Chargers play ball?
Adofo-Mensah will have to pick up the phone and call the Arizona Cardinals or the Los Angeles Chargers to see if either one would be willing to trade down. The Vikings can offer an enticing package of early-round picks, but the number of impact prospects available in the first round means the Cardinals and the Chargers might need to be blown away to move out of the top five.
Arizona general manager Ossenfort Mountains told reporters this week that he has been fielding calls for the fourth overall pick. If the Cardinals stay at #4, they will be in prime position to select Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Jr. — regarded as the top available player in the draft outside of presumptive top pick Caleb Williams — and give star quarterback Kyler Murray a new premier pass-catcher.
Chargers GM Joe Hortiz has also said teams are “gauging” whether he wants to deal the fifth overall pick. Under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, The Angels is intent on building a strong offensive line and running game, but the Bolts too need weapons for franchise quarterback Justin Herbert after releasing Mike Williams and trading Keenan Allen.
