The National Assembly of Djibouti passed a law on Thursday 13 October classifying the FRUD-Armé among the “terrorist groups”. This rebel group of Afar fighters, active in the country for many years, killed seven Djiboutian soldiers during the attack on a military camp on Friday, October 7, in Garabtissan, in the Tadjourah region.
The deputies were gathered in emergency procedure Thursday in Djibouti. On their agenda: the examination of a bill “ qualifying a movement of “terrorist group””, the targeted movement being the armed wing of the United Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy, says “ FRUD-armed “. This group operates in remote areas near Ethiopia and Eritrea, where according to a report by UN investigators, it also has a training camp.
In the presence of the Prime Minister and the government, the National Assembly, very largely dominated by the presidential majority, paid tribute to the soldiers killed in Friday’s attack. The law was passed unanimously, according to its communications department.
International arrest warrants now possible
Until then, Djiboutian officials had already described the FRUD-armé as “ terrorist “, but this time, it is enshrined in law. This concretely means that the response will henceforth be harsher for all those found guilty of association, complicity or collaboration with the FRUD-armé. Above all, the Djiboutian government will also be able to issue international arrest warrants against the exiled leaders of the movement, via Interpol.
