The National begins Monday afternoon the debates on the major energy reform, aimed at strengthening renewables. Three days are planned for the discussions. MEPs will have to find their way between energy production and nature protection.

The reform wants to accelerate the production of indigenous renewable energy. Numerical objectives are specified. Like the Council of States, the National should revise them upwards.

To achieve these objectives, several measures are on the table. In particular, this involves giving priority to the interests of hydroelectric, wind, photovoltaic, biogas or geothermal installations producing green energy over other interests. Or to grant them investment contributions.

The right should push to lower the environmental requirements when building these facilities, or even to restart nuclear power plants. The left, the Greens in the lead, will try to limit the strokes of the penknife in the protection of nature.

Mandatory solar panels

Several provisions still aim to ensure security of supply in winter. The increase in the objectives for the hydropower plants or the reserve for the hard blows could also give cause for discussion. Just like the obligation for large buildings and car parks to equip themselves with solar panels.

The size of the working document is a good indication of the scope of the debates to come: 150 pages. The proposals of the members of the commission are legion. They are joined by around twenty individual proposals from the other members of the Board.
