JOHANNESBURG (South Africa) – The launch of the direct air line between Algeria and South Africa will further strengthen the strategic and economic relations between the two countries, Finance Minister Laaziz Faid said Monday in Johannesburg.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the official agreement to launch the Algiers-Johannesburg direct air line, Mr. Faid said that this line “is not only a means of transport between two countries, but a symbol able to broaden the fields of understanding between two brotherly countries”.

Recalling the depth of the historic relations established between Algeria and South Africa, the Minister considered that this line “is intended to be an extension of the good relations of brotherhood between the two countries”, and has a strategic dimension in that it will connect the north of Africa to its extreme south.

More abundantly, he explained that his ministerial department would provide all the facilitations to Air Algérie in order to consolidate its fleet, thus allowing it to open new lines, within the framework of the policy of the President of the Republic, aiming at a better positioning of Algeria in Africa.

The Director General (DG) of Transport in South Africa indicated that this line would experience great dynamics, Algeria being able to be a point of arrival or transit to Europe, Latin America and Asia, emphasizing that this route would be more comfortable for travelers who would now spend a shorter time in their travels.

Algeria has always been welcome in South Africa, given the close relations that the two countries have had since the sixties of the last century, he said.

For his part, the CEO of Air Algérie, Yacine Benslimane indicated that the airline aims to set itself up as a hub for air transport lines around the world, assuring that this approach will inevitably pass through the opening of lines linking Algeria to the rest of the world.

It should be noted that the signing ceremony of the agreement was enhanced by the presence of Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of the South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who affirmed that the positions of Algeria, in the past and in the present time, towards the African peoples, expressed by its support for the right of peoples to self-determination or its position vis-à-vis the Sahrawi question, make this country a suitable locomotive for Africa so as to resume the place that suits it, as a solid continent through its children and through its wealth.
