The Next Grand Theft Auto: Why Rockstar Shouldn’t Debut the Trailer at The Game Awards

Last Wednesday, Rockstar confirmed that they would be giving us the first trailer for “The Next Grand Theft Auto” in early December. This apparently set the entire internet on fire. And not just because people were so keen to finally see official footage of GTA VI in high resolution and confirm that the game is set in the Vice City area. Forums around the world are starting to flood with speculation about when we might see it. A popular theory is that it took place during Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards show on December 7th (that’s December 8th for most of us in Europe), as his work is known for some of the biggest reveals every year. I think this would be a big mistake. Let me tell you why. Celebrating a great year we’ve had The show is still called The Game Awards, with Keighley constantly reiterating that its main purpose is to celebrate the games we’ve played over the past 12 months. That obviously hasn’t stopped him from revealing Death Stranding 2, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, Hades II, Alan Wake 2, Xbox Series X and more over the years, but showing off GTA VI takes it to another level. It doesn’t matter if it’s at the beginning, middle or end of the show. Showing the GTA VI trailer at The Game Awards will take the spotlight away from everything else – whether it’s the awards or other trailers. Every outlet will be focused on writing about Grand Theft Auto VI and studying the trailers, while millions of people are leaving live broadcasts to share their thoughts on social media. Did Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate III or The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom win Game of the Year? Few people will know. The God of War: Ragnarök expansion reveal will eventually appear at the bottom of your news feed. We will soon forget about that new idiot trying to get on stage and yell about GTA or politics. Okay, that last part would be great, but you know what I mean. Here’s an ad: GTA VI just overshadows anything else at the show. It will also lead many developers and publishers to question whether it’s worth spending so much time and money to attend a future The Game Awards show. Speaking of spending time and money… Rockstar doesn’t need a gaming award. Grand Theft Auto V sells about 5 million copies per quarter, so “everyone” knows what GTA is. Anyone watching The Game Awards knows that GTA VI is coming soon, so why is Rockstar “sharing the spotlight with an inferior game”? Rockstar and Take-Two have shown over the years that they don’t need help from the rest of the gaming industry to promote their games. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 were just announced on Twitter with record-breaking engagement, and the fact that Sam Houser confirmed that the GTA VI trailer had over 173.5 million views on The whole world will know in a few seconds whether the trailer has just debuted there. So why show up at The Game Awards? In fact, I think it’s more likely that the trailer will air during the NBA Finals on December 9th. This will bring it to the attention of more mainstream gamers and the public, while the rest of us see it on X, Facebook, YouTube, etc. But again: GTA VI doesn’t need anyone, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Rockstar follows the same formula as Red Dead Redemption 2 by teasing a countdown a day or two before the trailer drops on the studio’s YouTube channel. Here’s the ad: Long story short: The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer debuting at The Game Awards will not only ruin the rest of the show, but it will hurt the industry. It would be a waste of time and money for Take-Two and Rockstar when they could get just as much attention by doing everything themselves. So don’t do anything stupid, Rockstar. Just ignore The Game Awards and release a trailer a few days before or after the biggest celebration of the year.
