They provoked ridicule during the presentation of the first rooms of the Olympic village. As in Tokyo in 2021, the beds on which the athletes will sleep this summer will be made of cardboard. After the Olympic Games (OG), the box springs will be recycled, duvets offered to athletes and the 16,000 mattresses (made in particular from recycled fishing line) donated to organizations. The French army, Emmaüs, the boarding school of the Paris Opera ballet school and the Tsuji hotel school will be the first beneficiaries. Using fewer resources and giving a second life to limit waste, this is the objective of the Games which aim to be the greenest in history and aim to halve their carbon footprint compared to previous editions.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee detailed, Monday March 18, the first results of its strategy for the Games “more circular”. It is contained in a new Olympic motto: “Less, better, for a long time”. The organizers are pleased to have succeeded in reducing the number of furniture items from 800,000 to 600,000 and to have imposed on their suppliers at least 15% of products designed from recycled material.

In addition to the cardboard beds, the furniture in the athletes’ village will be made up of coffee tables made from badminton shuttlecocks, poufs made from parachute fabric and even chairs made from recycled bottle caps. In catering, Paris 2024 has committed to reducing the use of single-use plastic by 50% compared to the London 2012 Games. This will involve more returnable containers and the deployment of beverage fountains (water and sodas) … by Coca-Cola, historic sponsor of the Olympic Games and undeniable “world champion” of plastic pollution, according to the latest ranking from the Break Free From Plastic association.

Map the resources mobilized

It is not easy for an event as gigantic as it is ephemeral as the Games to be part of “sustainability”. “We started with a blank sheet of paper,” recognizes Caroline Louis, circular economy manager of Paris 2024 with a certain sense of self-deprecation: “I am the first circular economy manager of the Olympics, we will at least make history with this title! »

As it did with its greenhouse gas emissions, the organizing committee attempted to map all the resources that will be mobilized for the Games in order to determine its “material footprint”. The vast majority (72%) relate to the twenty sites and infrastructures to be temporarily delivered (judo at the ephemeral Grand Palais, beach volleyball at the Champs-de-Mars or skateboarding at the Concorde), 12% of their development ( furniture), 9% of public reception (12 million meals and snacks to be served), 6% of derived products (mascot, souvenirs) and 1% of sports equipment (handball or volleyball court coverings).
