The passing of the Syrian writer and critic Ezzat Omar

On the evening of Friday, December 22, 2023, the Syrian writer and critic Izzat Omar, who had resided in the Emirates since 1990, passed away. He enriched the cultural arena with dozens of articles and studies that dealt with literature in the Emirates, and he was active in the local cultural arena for many years.

Izzat Omar was born in the city of Manbij and studied in its schools, graduating from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Aleppo in 1977.

He worked in the Directorate of Culture in Aleppo and in the Institute of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University of Aleppo until 1990. He is a member of the Emirates Writers and Writers Union. Member of the editorial board of the National Cultural Encyclopedia of the United Arab Emirates. He has judged several literary awards. He participated in critical seminars inside and outside the country, and recently worked in the Sharjah Cultural Magazine.

Ezzat Omar has written on literary criticism, short stories, novels, children’s literature, and young adult literature. He has many creative and critical books, including:

“A cage looking for birds.” A novel published in 1991 – a weekly series with ten episodes.

“The Golden Windows,” a collection of short stories for children, published by the Department of Culture and Information, Sharjah, 1996.
Ghassan’s novel series, 13 novels for young people, published by Ammon Publishing House, Jordan 2001.

“Butterfly Wings”, a collection of short stories for children, about the Sharjah Childhood and Adolescent Centers, 2002.
