The People’s Savings Account (LEP) will see its remuneration increase to 6% on 1 August. Clem, a reader of MoneyVox, wonders what happens to the interest of his LEP which is filled to the ceiling, or 7,700 euros. The MoneyVox editorial staff answers him. Question from Clem

“If my LEP is 7,700 euros, so the maximum, where is the interest paid? »

Thanks Clem for your question. Indeed, your Popular Savings Account (LEP) is currently capped at 7,700 euros. However, like other savings accounts such as the Livret A, the Livret de Développement Durable et Solidaire (LDDS) or the Plan Épargne Logement (PEL), interest is credited year after year to your savings account. And this, regardless of the amount reached. The annual capitalization allows you to exceed the ceiling, but not to make a new payment which would feed your LEP beyond the maximum ceiling.

LEP ceiling revised upwards

Good news Clem, the LEP ceiling will be soon to be upgraded. It will go to 10 000 euros in the fall, as announced by Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy on July 12. According to the Banque de France, “the average outstanding amount of LEPs above the ceiling is 8,799 euros” at the end of 2022. 3.89 million LEPs are concerned for an outstanding amount of 34.21 billion euros.

That said, even with the revaluation of the LEP ceiling, it will only be possible to exceed the 10,000 euro mark thanks to the capitalization of interest. Thus, if your interest does not increase the balance of your LEP above 10,000 euros, payments will still be possible. But only in this case. Note that as for the Livret A or the LDDS, the interests are not not subject to taxation.
