A hundred local and federal police officers are mobilized throughout the weekend in the province of Luxembourg as part of a vast control operation linked to road safety.
Organized as part of the nationwide operation “Weekend without drunk driving”, the operation also marks the launch of a protocol bringing together the six local police zones of the province, the governor, the public prosecutor and the federal police.
“The goal is to unite our efforts to fight against road safety in the province of Luxembourg”, explains Christophe Brück, divisional commissioner and coordinating director of the federal police at the level of the Luxembourg district. “If the number of accidents in the province of Luxembourg is not higher than elsewhere in the country, their severity is twice as high as the national average.”
In addition to the major risk factors of driving under the influence, excessive speed, not wearing a seat belt and using a smartphone while driving, topographical and meteorological factors more specific to the province may explain this trend.
“A weather that makes the roads more slippery, a secondary network on the side of the valley that is less forgiving of driving errors, but also the fact that people have to travel greater distances”, continues the divisional commissioner. Saturday evening, checks took place in particular near the Recogne bridge (Libramont), where motorists without seat belts were invited to board a barrel car. “We have to work on people’s behavior through awareness and control actions”, observes Christophe Brück. The operation will continue throughout the weekend throughout the province.
