The media, the pope said, has a positive or negative effect on our personality.

Pope Francis on Saturday (23/03/24) received and addressed a group of Italian radio and television channel Rai (RAI) executives, media workers, artists, technicians and their families at the Vatican.

Recalling the celebration of the seventies of television and the centenary of radio, the Pope said that this double birthday calls them, on the one hand, to look back at their history, intertwined with that of Italy, and, on the other hand, to look to the future, to the role they will play in an era yet to be built.

Exhorting that communication is a gift to society, the Pope explained in his homily that service and universality are at the core of the mission of radio and television media workers.

The Pope said that the term “service” is often reduced to a tool and it is misunderstood as being served, and clarified that media activity should be a response to the needs of citizens and should not be limited to the locality, but should have the form of universality and nurture the dignity of each person.

To serve, the Pope said, means seeking and nurturing the truth, in its essence in the field of communication. As an example, the Pope pointed to the fight against the spread of fake news and the deceitful plan of those who try to ideologically influence public opinion by telling lies and disintegrating the social fabric.

Analyzing the importance of the term “universal” in media work, the Pope explained that the profession of media workers is not for the good of a few, but for the good of all, and that this includes the commitment to consider and give a voice to the voiceless, the marginalized and the poorest of the poor.

The Pope said that it contains the call to be an instrument for the growth of knowledge, to open new perspectives on reality, not to feed the bubbles of indifference, and to train the youth to open their minds and eyes and dream big. In this sense, the Pope reminded us that, at the global level, the entire media system needs to step out of it, introspect and look beyond borders.
