The dwellings of the 7th avenue of the Bukirasazi I district of the urban area of Kinama in the town hall of Bujumbura are threatened by a ravine dug in the middle of this road. Worried, the population of this locality is sounding the alarm.

Monday, July 11, in the 7th avenue of the Bukirasazi I district. A few steps from the entrance to this avenue, we see a large ravine filled with waste and sewage in the middle of the avenue. Several households on the edges of the road have already been swept away, others have cracks.

Alain, one of the inhabitants of this locality, indicates that this ravine was caused by the collapse of the edges of the gutter separating the Bukirasazi I & II districts. And to reveal that this gutter began to deteriorate since 2007.

“We live with fear in our stomachs and especially during the rainy season”, confides Alain. And above all, he adds, the source of their concern is the children playing in this ravine.

“We have tried everything to prevent them from going to play in this ravine because there is a risk that they will catch diseases linked to the lack of hygiene there”.

The inhabitants of the Bukirasazi I district are asking that their avenue be rehabilitated urgently, otherwise their houses risk collapsing.

The local administration of the Bukirasazi I district reassures the population of this locality. Signoline Kanyange, cell leader of this locality, promises that rehabilitation works of this ravine are planned for soon.
