The Potential Dangers of Berberine: Why You Should Be Cautious

2023-10-09 07:43:37

Berberine, a substance coming from plants such as arolles, marigolds or berberis, is found in several food supplements. A natural form of “Ozempic”, this medication treats diabetes and hypercholesterolemia in particular, and thus helps fight obesity. Many people looking to lose weight tout its “fat-burning” powers.

Testachats is now alerting consumers to the “harmful” effects of this substance: “The evidence is rather slim that berberine is useful for these indications”, underlines the consumer association to Sudinfo. “On the other hand, taking berberine presents a potential health risk once morest which consumers are not sufficiently protected,” she continues.

Data collected by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) shows that the consumption of berberine can cause gastrointestinal disorders, hypoglycemia and low blood pressure. It can also strengthen or inhibit the action of other medications. The results of this study are expected in May 2025.

In the meantime, Testatchats strongly advises avoiding consuming these products.
