“The Potential Nuclear Threat: What You Need to Know About Zaporizhia Nuclear Plant in Ukraine”

The director-general of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency said on Saturday that the situation around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear plant in Ukraine has become “highly unpredictable and potentially dangerous.”

Rafael Grossi called for measures to be taken to ensure the safe operation of the Zaporizhia plant.

Grossi issued the warning in light of what he said were ongoing evacuations in the nearby town of Enrodar, ordered by the local, Russian-appointed governor.

“The general situation in the area near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has become very unpredictable and potentially dangerous,” Grossi said on the agency’s website.

“I am deeply concerned about the dangers facing the plant in terms of safety and nuclear security. We must act now to prevent a serious nuclear accident with repercussions for the population and the environment,” he added.

Russian forces seized the Zaporizhia station, days after Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.

The exchange of fire near the station was repeated, with each side blaming the other.

Grossi visited the plant, Europe’s largest, in March as part of efforts to talk the two sides into an agreement to operate the plant safely, and repeatedly warned of the dangers of military operations near it.
