To live a long and healthy life, one should adopt the whole Mediterranean way of life. This was recently revealed by researchers from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (USA) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain). In a study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, they examined the link between all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality and the Mediterranean lifestyle. For this, the scientists analyzed the habits of 110,799 British people aged 40 to 75.

Mortality: a lower risk for adults who have adopted the Mediterranean lifestyle

Participants provided information on their lifestyle according to several categories: consumption of foods that are part of the Mediterranean diet such as fruits and whole grains, respect for habits and practices around meals, in particular limiting salt and drinking healthy drinks, taking regular naps, exercising and spending time with friends. Each item was then scored, with higher total scores indicating greater adoption of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

During a nine-year follow-up, 4,247 adults died from all causes, 2,401 from cancer and 731 from cardiovascular disease. The authors found that people with higher total scores had a 29% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 28% lower risk of cancer mortality than those with low scores.

Adapting the Mediterranean way of life to local characteristics

In detail, volunteers who adopted a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, healthy habits such as limiting salt and added sugars and habits promoting rest, physical activity and socialization had a lower risk of mortality. all causes and cancer. As for people with high results for the categories “physical activity, rest, social habits and conviviality”, they had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

“This study suggests that it is possible for non-Mediterranean populations to adopt the Mediterranean diet using locally available products and to adopt the entire Mediterranean way of life within their own cultural context,” concluded Mercedes Sotos Prieto, Ramon y Cajal researcher at the Autonomous University of Madrid and lead author of the work, in a statement.
