The Russian businessman had announced his intention to sell the club in the face of sanctions from the British Government
The Premier League announced this Saturday that it has stripped Roman Abramovich of his position as owner of the Chelsea after the sanctions imposed this week by the British Government. “The decision will have no impact on the club’s ability to continue training and playing its games, as dictated by the permission received from the Government until May 31,” the English league said in a statement.

As announced by the British Government last Thursday, the Abramovich’s assets are frozen, so Chelsea cannot generate any income through ticket sales, merchandising and player operations. The Premier does leave the door open for the club to change ownership in the coming days, despite the fact that the government sanction does not allow it.
“The disqualification of an owner normally implies the sale of his shareholding. Roman Abramovich has already publicly declared his intention to sell chelsea and the process has begun. Under the current circumstances, the sale of a club is not allowed. However, we understand that the Government is open to granting a license that allows the club to be sold,” added the Premier’s statement.
