The President of the European Parliament is hospitalized and has decided to cancel all his official commitments, the European institution announced on Monday.

“The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, has been hospitalized in Italy since December 26,” Sassoli’s office said in a statement, adding that all his presidential activities have been canceled.

Sassoli was hospitalized with “a serious complication due to a dysfunction of the immune system,” the statement said.

He was admitted to hospital with pneumonia in September last year and was unable to chair plenary sessions and attend high-level meetings for weeks.

Regardless of his state of health, Sassoli did not intend to run for a second term in the elections for the presidency of the European Parliament which will be held during the plenary session from January 17 to 20.
