The price of gas drops again: when will we see a difference on the bill?

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

After reaching peaks, gas prices continue to fall and reach their lowest level in 16 months. The reference rate has fallen below €60 per megawatt hour (MWh). A drop that should impact bills very quickly.

It had reached €354 per MWh last August, it is now at €58. A drop in the price of gas that must be put into perspective according to Julie Frère, spokesperson for Test-Achats: “We must not forget that prices started to increase before the war in Ukraine, due to the post-covid economic recovery. In January 2021, we were around €20 per MWh. Today, we are still in a register of high prices.”

She announces change very quickly on the invoices: “Concretely, if you have a contract that is indexed every month, you will feel it next month on your bill, so very quickly. If, on the other hand, you have a contract that is indexed every three months, you will feel this drop for the next quarter..”

Please note that the reduction only concerns gas, not electricity. Test-Achats recommends using an energy price comparator. Consumers are free to switch providers whenever they want and free of charge.
