The Pumas seven and their great present

The streak continues. And the hope of repeating the Tokyo 2020+1 bronze medal, a few months before the Paris Olympic Games, is also growing. Yesterday, that illusion was reinforced after the Argentine rugby sevens team, Los Pumas 7s, defeated South Africa 15-7. In this way, they remained as leaders of Group A, which will be defined today against Ireland.

The Pumas 7s, led by coach Santiago Gómez Cora, who completed 500 games in charge of the Argentine national team, played against the South African team under heavy rain.

The first half ended with five goals and in the complementary part, Luis González scored twice and Tobías Wade scored the second goal to seal the final 17-5.

Before, Los Pumas 7s had defeated Spain 28-21, thanks to two tries by Marcos Moneta, another by Tobías Wade and one more by Joaquín Pellandini, plus conversions by Wade (2) and Santiago Vera Feld (2). Now, Los Pumas 7s will close their participation in the qualifying stage by facing Ireland.

The Pumas 7s have just become champions last Sunday in Vancouver, beating New Zealand 36-12. In that same Canadian city they had won two titles: in 2022 by beating Fiji 29-10 and in 2023 by beating France 33-21.

But he didn’t just celebrate there. The Argentine team won the Perth tournament in January, defeating the local Australia in the final, and added another gold in the Cape Town Sevens, against the same rival.

The only bad thing happened on the initial date of the Sevens Circuit, in Dubai, when Los Pumas lost in the definition against South Africa by 12-7. However, the great moment of the Argentine team is reflected in the official World Rugby ranking: it is first with 76 points, followed by Ireland and Fiji, with 54; New Zealand, 50; and Australia.

This scenario is what allows us to dream of even improving the third place achieved in the Tokyo Games. On that occasion, Fiji took gold and New Zealand took silver. Now, those rivals are below Argentina in the world ranking.
