The race for the Palme d’Or award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival kicked off with a Japanese film, Kori-eda. The Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda, known for his films charged with emotions and family descriptions, is one of the permanent guests of the ancient cinematic event.

His new movie, “Monster”, is expected to impress the festival goers this year as well.

The Japanese filmmaker won the Palme d’Or award in 2018 for his movie “Shoplifters”, before filming in France the movie “La Verité” (The Truth) with Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche, then in South Korea with the movie “Broker”, which participated in the competition last year. In Return to Japan, Kore-eda chooses to follow the path of a child and his widowed mother, and their relationship with his school teacher. The Japanese director is the first to pass the red carpet during the festival among the 21 filmmakers participating in the competition for the Palme d’Or.
