The race for the presidency of Medef turns into a duel. While there were three qualified for the final round, one of the competitors has just left the track. Pierre Brajeux announced his decision on Wednesday, May 10, stating that he agreed with the candidacy of Dominique Carlac’h. This is now the only opponent of Patrick Martin, presented as the favorite. The maneuver comes as the authorities of the employers’ organization had validated, the day before, the participation of the trio in the ballot.

Mme Carlac’h and Mr. Brajeux officially sealed their alliance on Wednesday afternoon during a joint press conference in Paris. On this occasion, the vice-president of Medef received the support of two other men, who had also embarked on the campaign, but without success. They are Guillaume Cairou, who did not obtain the number of sponsorships required to remain in the running, and Olivier Klotz, who had thrown in the towel several weeks ago in favor of Mr. Brajeux.

This redistribution of the cards allows Mme Carlac’h to land in “gathering candidate”, as she reported on Wednesday. His speech was resolutely offensive, even sharp with regard to Mr. Martin, currently deputy president of Medef and very well placed to succeed Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, since he benefits from the support of important professional federations – for example the Union of industries and trades of metallurgy – and many territorial structures of the employers’ organization.

“The movement that we currently feel [au sein du Medef] is a grassroots movement against an election arranged from Paris”she said, as if to suggest that his rival enjoys preferential treatment, linked in particular to the position he occupies: set up by Mr. Roux de Bézieux shortly after his victory in 2018, the position of deputy president installed the idea of « dauphin », “of heir”, she lamented. And to drive the point home: “Any skipped election would take risks on sustainability, on representativeness, on the influence that we claim to have. »

Durant son intervention, Mme Carlac’h pleaded for a “operational evolution” from Medef to “more horizontality”, “more transversality”, “more transparency”, implying that the outgoing management – of which she is a part – had not done enough in this area. For his part, Mr. Brajeux explained that he wanted “raise a voice that will carry even more weight in the debate”by concluding a pact with the candidate. “We have common values, such as honesty”, he pointed out. A way to stand out from Mr. Martin that he will no doubt appreciate.
