The Red-Blue Abuse of Power: Herbert Kickl and the U-Committee Hearings – Live Updates and Analysis

After his ex-head of communications and a lawyer from the Interior Ministry, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl was asked about the “red-blue abuse of power” in the ÖVP-U committee. The “Presse” reported live from parliament.

The schedule of the U-committee on the “red-blue abuse of power” desired by the ÖVP did not hold on Thursday. Actually, four respondents should have been heard, but in the end there were only three. It started from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the former head of communications in the Ministry of the Interior led by Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Alexander Höferl. A lawyer and former office manager from his department was then interviewed before Kickl himself took a seat in the U-Committee room in Parliament at 4:30 p.m. There was no time left to question Reinhard Teufel, Kickl’s former head of cabinet in the Interior Ministry.

During his appearance in the House, Kickl emphasized that the People’s Party had cut its teeth on him. He was “worked on” by her, but he didn’t allow himself to be bent, he said. The FPÖ club chairman emphasized just as vehemently that it was a “blatant lie” when the ÖVP claimed that ex-constitutional protection officer Egisto Ott, who is currently in custody, should have become “something” under him. “I don’t know this Mr. Ott, I didn’t know him and I have no interest in getting to know him.”

One thing is certain: When he, Klickl, became Interior Minister, he was not even informed about a “problem case in Ott”. And one thing is also certain: Ott received all of his functions under the ÖVP interior ministers. This is a “complete failure of the Austrian People’s Party”. Where it says Russia and the fugitive Wirecard Austria boss Jan Marsalek, “the ÖVP is 98 or 99 percent in.”

Guessing about the Klagenfurt address

When asked about possible interventions in the media and chats between Ott and the former FPÖ security spokesman Hans-Jörg Jenewein, Kickl emphasized: “It is simply wrong to claim that Jenewein was my right hand.” He himself did not intervene either and as Interior Minister he did not deal with advertisements; there were separate departments for that.

There was then a particularly long struggle over Kickl’s possible role in the advertising agencies “Ideenschmiede” and “Signs” – since trial judge Christa Edwards lacked the connection to the subject of the investigation. The result: numerous, lengthy debates on the rules of procedure, at the end of which Kickl claimed that he had been a partner in the “idea factory” for a few weeks in 2005. But: He never received a cent.

A trust agreement brought into play by the SPÖ and the Neos doesn’t change that – because it is true that the “Signs” is based at an address in Klagenfurt, and it is true that Kickl also has a trust agreement that relates to the same property aim, but this was “never realized”. That means: He never made anything from the property. In general, he had no private-sector activities as a minister. What is happening here is a “play” for election campaign reasons.

A lawyer as “Kickl’s superior”

There had previously been numerous debates on the rules of procedure as part of the questioning of Alexander Höferl, former head of communications in Interior Minister Kickl’s cabinet (December 18, 2017 to May 22, 2019). The core of this was the question of whether FPÖ parliamentary group leader Christian Hafenecker and other liberal MPs had agreed with Höferl’s statement in advance or whether he had been put under pressure. Höferl ultimately denied that there had been any influence.

After him, the lawyer E. was invited, who caused laughter with his statement that he had once been Kickl’s superior in the time management system of the Ministry of the Interior. Because: “Technically, each employee is assigned a supervisor. And since Herbert Kickl didn’t have a superior as Interior Minister, something was missing in the system and that’s why my name was apparently entered there: I just noticed that, I also found it amusing.” The live ticker to read:
