The rejection of the political world to the aggression against President Sebastián Piñera

A forceful and transversal condemnation was made by leaders of almost the entire political arc to the aggression suffered this Thursday by the President Sebastian Pinera.

After 2:00 p.m., in the midst of a pattern called by the government to commemorate the two years of the fight against Covid-19 in the country, the President was attacked by an assistant to the activity, who threw water on his face and He rebuked him in front of the cameras. “Worst!”, shouted the woman identified as Audrey Astrid Burgos (22), a Journalism student at the Alberto Hurtado University and who attended as a companion of her grandfather, David López.

Despite the fact that Piñera assured that he would not take legal action against her, for which she was released, party presidents and parliamentarians reproached the fact and expressed their solidarity with the current Head of State.

From Democratic Socialism, the president of the PS, Alvaro Elizalde, He assured that “in a democracy it is always very important to take care of the climate of respect between all and all”.

while his pair Natalia Piergentili (PPD) He stated that “I regret and condemn what President Piñera experienced today. I believe that these acts of violence do not contribute to an environment of dialogue and respect for the institutions that we so much need.”

“Any attack on any person is a sign not only of rudeness, but of an anti-democratic look that seems serious to me,” said the radical helmsman. Alberto Robles. And he added: “It seems to me that no one, not even Sebastián Piñera, however bad a president he may have been, deserves aggression of any kind. It is as if later someone from the right attacked Gabriel Boric for having won. It seems to me unacceptable that any person commits those kinds of acts and I think that he should have some consequence of his acts, in terms of being punished ”.

The same position was expressed by the vice-president of the Liberal Party, William Moreno. “The opinion that we have is the same that we would have for any case of a similar nature and it is that aggression and intimidation do not fit in political practice in a democracy. And the criterion that one can apply to one’s allies and to oneself in politics is the same one that has to be applied to one’s adversaries”.

The Vice President of Christian democracy and candidate to preside over the phalanx, Felipe Delpín, stressed -in turn- that “violence will always generate discord and deeper differences. It is not the way and we totally repudiate it. While it is true that there is freedom to demonstrate, one must proceed in a peaceful manner. I hope that we all repudiate this type of aggression that the President of the Republic suffered today, which, despite the differences, cannot occur”.

Since I Approve Dignity, meanwhile, they only spoke from the FRVS. Its vice president, Flavia Torrealba, maintained that “democracy has mechanisms to resolve political disputes and we will never accept violence as one of those mechanisms. President Piñera has already collaborated enough in the weakening of the institutions to continue adding new actors to this chorus. Let us not forget, moreover, that we are in a constitutive moment of deep contestation of power and that it will most probably shape a new form of relations. We must take care of this moment and attacking the President does not contribute to the climate of serene dialogue that we need”.

For their part, from Comunes they declined to establish a position and in the PC, Social Convergence and Democratic Revolution did not pronounce themselves, at least, until the closing of this edition.

The fact, in addition, caused annoyance between the parties of Chile Vamos. “I see many justifying, minimizing, putting context and relativizing the aggression against the President of the Republic. It is essential to have a single voice on that: it is unacceptable. The Presidency takes care of itself, whoever the President is”, said the UDI helmsman, Xavier Macaya.

Until the closing of this edition, the elected president, Gabriel Boric, had not commented on the incident that affected President Piñera.
