This step is subject to several conditions: putting on an electronic bracelet, canceling passports, banning the use of social media, carrying firearms, or leaving the house in the evening and during the weekend.
“Judge Alexandre de Moraes considered that they could be released pending trial (…) as long as the investigation did not show that they contributed to financing (the attacks) or that they were the organizers of the attack,” the Supreme Court said in a statement.
The judge also took into account that “most of them have clean criminal records.”
The court said that 767 suspects are still behind bars awaiting trial, while 693 have been granted conditional release.
On January 8th, thousands of people opposed to the defeat of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court, a week after the inauguration of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The attackers easily breached the security cordon to vandalize everything, including valuable artifacts.
Lula won the October ballot by a narrow margin, with 50.9% of the vote against 49.1% for the outgoing president.
The violence in Brasilia was similar to the attack on the Capitol building in Washington two years ago by supporters of Donald Trump, refusing to defeat him against current US President Joe Biden.
